WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING?
Counselling often has a connotation of being focused on a particular life adjustment issue e.g marriage counselling, whereas psychotherapy sometimes has the connotation of dealing with deeper issues, although this may not necessarily be.the case.
The two terms are often used interchangeably. Both are forms of what is colloquially known as “talk therapy” and involve giving respectful attention to a client in a non-judgmental way, allowing him or her to focus on the issues in their life and the way they want to move forward.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY AND PSYCHOLOGY?
Psychology is the study of human behaviour. Psychologists work in a wide variety of fields including education, human resource management, psychometric testing, health, marketing and of course counselling and psychotherapy. Psychotherapists apply psychological techniques and principles in a therapeutic setting. While training in the relevant psychological principles are important to psychotherapists, it is not necessary to be a psychologist to train or work as a psychotherapist.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY AND PSYCHIATRY?
Psychiatrists normally work in a hospital setting, and are likely to be more concerned with severe mental disorders, than with the wide range of problems and difficulties for which it is appropriate to consult a psychotherapist. In addition, as psychiatrists are medical doctors, they can prescribe drugs , while psychotherapists cannot.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOTHERAPY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS?
Psychoanalysis, also known as “depth psychology”, was developed by Freud, and is one of the earliest forms of psychotherapy. Traditionally, it is often a very intense process with hourly sessions up to three times a week for several years.
